English
KSPS uses whole school Curriculum Maps which ensures consistent teaching and assessing of the Australian Curriculum from Transition to Year 6. These plans also enable us to integrate English with other subjects such as Mathematics and HASS which helps the students to make connections across the subject areas.

Literacy and Numeracy week is celebrated every year across the school with a range of activities including Character Day where staff, students and families are invited to dress up as their favourite book character and join together for a whole school assembly.
Community members are also involved in the celebrations throughout the week by coming in and reading to our students. The older students develop their leadership skills by running activities with younger students involving hands-on and digital experiences in rotation activities.

English Programs implemented at our school include;
Jolly Phonics – particularly in Transition and Year 1 where it is introduced and consolidated through intensive programs to provide our students with a solid foundation on which they continue to build on their reading and writing skills. This focuses on the learning of phonics using a multi-sensory method which is very motivating and engaging for the students and the language and actions used in the program continues across the school to ensure consistency for the students.

Jolly Grammar- this program helps to teach grammar to children in an active and multi-sensory way. It has an emphasis on consolidating the children’s knowledge from Jolly Phonics and helping them develop an understanding of how grammar works by teaching key essential grammar rules.

Handwriting – we use Victorian Cursive style at KSPS with the explicit teaching of letter formation using the Casey Caterpillar Handwriting program in the early years and continuing with modelled handwriting. Students need to be able to automatically form letters so they can focus on other elements of their writing such as spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar and structure.

Reading Eggs – this is an online program and is incorporated into our reading program and uses the five essential keys to reading success focusing on a core curriculum of phonics and phonemic awareness, sight words, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading for meaning. Students are provided with their own log-in details to provide them with the option to access it from home as well.
