At Katherine South Primary School the early years of a child’s life are considered a vital time for laying the foundations for social, emotional, physical, cognitive and creative development. These beginning years of schooling are ones in which important learning takes place. Children no matter what their age are unique human beings who are motivated to learn in different ways, and who develop at different rates. Students are exposed to different programs and areas of the curriculum including English, Mathematics, HASS, PE, Science, The Arts, Technologies.
Jolly Phonics is a program that teachers literacy through synthetic phonics. Each sound has an action and a song to assist students to recall sounds and letter names.
Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) runs in addition to the normal physical education lessons. It assists students in their development of gross motor skills and fine motor skills. The key areas of development through PMP are:
- Gross motor skills e.g. running, jumping
- Fine motor skills e.g. isolating fingers, using tools, copying precise actions
- Crossing the midline of the body
- Body and space awareness
- Visual and spatial skills
- Rhythm sequence
- Memory and listening skills.
