The role of the DSTA (Defence School Transition Aide) within the Katherine South Primary School is to act not only as a friend and confidante to the children of Defence Force families, but also as a liaison between the school, its teaching staff and the childrens' families.
For many students, starting at a new school can be an overwhelming and sometimes traumatic experience, as can leaving established friendships, familiar places and routines.
By fostering a comfortable relationship the DSTA is a person who can be an understanding and sympathetic ear during school hours, whenever necessary.
The DSTA spends time in the classroom, in the playground and with children during lunchtime activities. This provides plenty of opportunities for Defence students to get together, encourage friendships and discuss any concerns or issues students may have about the school, the deployment or absence of a parent or any other problem that they feel unable to address in a normal classroom setting.
Equally important in the role of the DSTA is to offer support to incoming, existing and outgoing families. Parents are warmly encouraged to contact the DSTA either by phone, email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or in person at any time during school hours if there is anything that they would like to discuss with regards to their childrens' wellbeing at school.
