One of the best parts of being a new Principal is that you get to see what is happening around you from a different perspective. I have seen many examples of good teaching being presented by people passionate about what they do. I have seen many examples of students arriving to class on time, prepared and engaging in their lessons. I have seen students helping out at community events, being involved in sporting competitions, and actively participating in extracurricular activities.
I have also seen that there are a small number of students who actively seek to disrupt the learning of others. These students choose not to attend classes and consume an inordinate amount of time from teachers trying to coax them back into classes. An even smaller group are intent on inciting or participating in violence, either verbal or physical. This cannot continue to happen.
Also worrying is the actions of a small group of young children who do not attend Katherine High School and are continuing to trespass on school grounds after hours, especially on weekends. This group of children is responsible for multiple break and entry events, graffiti, and destruction of property including cutting down palms and trees.
The police are working very actively to apprehend this group and a number of potential solutions have been put forward, including fencing the property and the use of CCTV cameras. Subject to approval from the School council, CCTV cameras will be installed on the property over the next few weeks.
In addition, the following action will occur, effective as of Monday 6th March:
· Any students involved in violence, either threatened or actual, verbal or physical, will be suspended from school (pending investigation).
· Those students identified as inciting violence and creating an unsafe school environment will be removed from the school to undertake an alternative educational program at an off-site campus. 10 students have been identified to start this program, effective as of Monday 6th March.
· Any student at school but truanting from class will be identified and suspended from school for a period of 3 days. If a student repeats the same action, they will be suspended for a period of 5 days.
These actions have the full support of the Regional Education Director, of the local Police, of our School Council, of staff and the great majority of students.
The Annual General Meeting of Katherine High School Council will be held in the school Library on Wednesday 15th March 2017 at 5:30pm.
Interested parents will be able to nominate themselves for election in positions declared vacant.
We invite and welcome all interested parents to attend the AGM.
