Gateways to Literacy
A selection of students from Transition to year 2 take part in Gateways to Literacy twice a week which is based on a comprehensive and ongoing analysis of learner needs and caters in different ways for ongoing needs in Oral language, Phonological awareness and perceptual motor development.
The program is supported by the whole school and uses seven staff members to work outside with the children. The children work through a series of stations aimed at developing their balance skills, eye-hand and eye-foot coordination and visual motor control. These skills directly relate to the classroom. Eg A child with balance problems may be unable to sit properly at a desk for any length of time and may slouch, wiggle, fidget etc) and their handwriting may possibly be badly formed and messy.
