Infectious Illnesses
From time to time illnesses do sweep through a school, often severely affecting the attendnace of both teachers and childre. In order to minimise this, the Department has advised the following exclusions from common illnesses:
Chicken Pox: Excluded for seven days after illness starts or until last lesion has healed
Conjunctivitis: Excluded until discharge from eyes ceases
Gardia: Excluded until treatment and diarrhoea have ceased
Hepatitis: Excluded until medical certificate is produced
Impetigo: Readmit when sores fully healed or if appropriate treatment being applied and exposed sores are fully covered with occlusive dressings.
Measles: Excluded for four days or until medical certificates is produced. Non-immunized contacts are to be excluded for 14 days from first day of appearance of rash in last case. If non-immunized contacts are vaccinated within 72 hours of contact with initial case they may return to school.
Mumps: Excluded for nine days or until swelling goes down.
Pediculosis (Nits): Excluded until day after appropriate treatment has commenced. Infestation of hair with head lice or nits is common in Darwin school children. Parents please check regularly and treat if necessary. pamphlets explaining treatment are available from the Front Office.
Ringworm: Exclude until healed unless covered.
Scabies: Exclude until completion of first treatment (24 hours). Treatment to be repeated after one week.
